It´s been a time since I have this dream/idea of an online version of Fallout. Would it be "technically" possible to convert the ORIGINAL Fallout 1 and 2 engine into an online engine?

I am doing a brainstorm of how it would be possible in terms of "design", i mean, how it would be implemented to an online dimension, but I lack of the technical knowledge to know if it would be possible.

The idea would be to recreate the fallout 1 era in an environment in which the normally NPC´s are actually people. Players have to make their way to surviving in the wastelands (trade, eat, have or build a house, have a job, cooperate with other real players...)

Of course, once you read this you may think of many problems (combat, turns, economy, and all the etc´s) but as I said I have many ideas on how to solve this problems in the design. However, since I have zero technical knowledge, I ask you, TeamX, if this can be turned into something real.

Last thing, this mod would mean that the stories and adventures are created by human interaction (so an advantage is not having to script them). Mapping would really be construction (the player earns some money, buys materials, and constructs the walls that will build his house...etc).
I would start explaining many many details, but I´d like to keep this brief. So all I have is ideas, but i think they could be valuable and I´ll be glad to share them or even give them to any fallout fan that is interested.

Thank you for your time,

Elyuss

P.D.: I have thought of a possible design to make it a permanent on-line game.

Not only you . There is two ways to create it. First - create a new engine; second - use original fallout engine. What do you like to hear? Use fallout2.exe to create fallount-online. It is possible, but I think easy write a new net-code engine.

As the minimum, one russian team (olegmmm, Den Baster, Kosh, worldworm) now creating a new engine for it. It's a close development group, but if you like and if you can, you can speak with they. FOnline - it's a russian forum, but everybody can write in english.

I think, exists another development goups, but i don't know about it.

Elyuss, you should talk to Ray and Tehnokrat as well. I have heard they were working on a similar project.

I appreciate very much your feedback.

Actually, its very nice to hear that it is possible, and its great! that the .exe file can be modified. Also, if theres already people working on it then its because it can be made.

I will contact these people to give as much help as I can. Thanks. Also, if they want to post something here it will be nice too, but as I said I will contact them anyway.

fallout2.exe can't be modified. But we can use fallout script system to link two or more players.

Well,

I have emailed Tehokrat, Ray and Den Baster, but I only got response from T saying that he doesnt know enlgish. Also, I tried to post in the forums, but I dont understand it since all is in russian.

If someone could forward my intention of helping in the on-line project/s , Id be very thankful, since I only have the barrier of language but I bring some ideas and good intentions with me...

Thanks,

Elyuss

There is an English project over at NMA as well, it is probably dead though:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14575&start=80

Heres some screens from the russian site, they look promising. I just posted these in the English FO online post on NMA, maybe you can recruit or be recruited by that team.

They take ages to load BTW, they show a nice pre alpha with serious potential.
